Old Tongue

Reconstructed Etymology

Sedai + -ye

Noun

sedavye

  1. Servants (with palye)

Attestations

asa e ye tasu gadou aes sedavye
"you and I became servants of all"

The phrase "aes sedai" is used as a title and name of an institution; the phrase "asa e ye tasu gadou aes sedai" might be confused to simply mean "when you and I joined the Aes Sedai". However, here, Latra is using this phrase as more than that; the subtitles translate her as saying "When you and I became Aes Sedai, we swore an oath to serve all". She is explicitly pointing to the meaning of the name, not just the name itself. Palye here indicates the term is being used either immaterially or as a metaphor or metonym; here, the use is to deconstruct the name itself so it is heard as "we became servants of all" instead of "we became Aes Sedai".
